Heinrich S and Anna Wall Peters- Mt Lake, MN
Est 1894
|
This picture was given to me by Denise H. She received this from her mother (Gladys Friesen Hudiburgh) by one of her Aunts and told that they were pictures of Elizabeth Peters' parents.
Denise was a little skeptical after reading that Heinrich didn't like his picture taken, but it was confirmed with other children of Elizabeth's and they agreed it was Heinrich & Anna. (Denise has the handwritten note that came with them showing the line from Anna to her grandmother, Hilda Wiens.) Her guess is the picture of the two of them was taken shortly after they immigrated to Mountain Lake.
Anna Wall Peters |
Anna spent the majority of her adult life unable to take care of herself. Anna's husband Heinrich S Peters cared for her until his death. (Noted in his Obit)
After Heinrich's death Anna's youngest son John Henry Peters looked after his mother. His signature is on her death certificate
John is Anna and Heinrich's youngest child, and my great grandfather. He was born in Russia, immigrated to MN where he was raised and died in Mountain Lake, MN
John and Helen |
Unsure if this picture is of them on their wedding date but I like to think it was. John married Helen in 1920 after John was drafted in WW1. John's draft card describes him as medium height and weight, blue eyes and brown hair. His draft card also has a check mark next to bold, but form this picture he has a lot of hair, even in his later years pictured next he still has hair.
John Peters and Helen Wannow children Herold and Rosella Peters |
John is pictures with his wife and two of his three children. Rosella was born in 1921 and Herold in 1923

Jacob married Helena Bloch in 1903 at age 17, after Helena passed away (1916) he married Elizabeth Petkau in 1917.
Danial Married Katharina Wiens they moved to Canada with their three children in September 1912.
Elizabeth H Peters Wiens 1898 |
Elizabeth is the second oldest and only daughter of Anna and Heinrich Peters. She is seated on the right, holding her daughter Lizzie in her lap. Her husband Peter Wiens is standing behind her. His parents, Peter J. Wiens and Elizabeth Kroeker are seated in front. His brother, Abram Wiens is standing behind them.
Danial H Peters and Older Sister Elizabeth Peters Wiens |
Danial and Elizabeth are six years apart, Danial was around the age of 10 when he arrived in the US, so this picture was taken in Russia.

Mennonites and Pictures:
Among Mennonites
and related groups it was not immediately accepted by all. For example, in the
1880s, the Brethren in Christ feared that photos would nourish pride
(nonconformity; humility).-Photography
Example: Heinrich S Peters grandchildren said that when they knew him in Mountain Lake, Minnesota, his mirror was always covered with a cloth so that he could see only his hair when he combed. Pride in self was not tolerated. They never knew him to allow a photograph of himself to be taken, though his children did finally take one of him after his death.
